SC issues notice to government on eviction of Baba Ramdev

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the government on eviction of Baba Ramdev from the Ramlila ground. Taking suomoto cognizance of Baba’s eviction by the government the apex court gave the government two-week notice to respond.

An advocate on Sunday approached the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the government to issue a white paper on the entire episode leading to the eviction of yoga guru Ramdev and the alleged barbaric police action early today against his followers at the Ramlila Grounds.

The petition filed by Ajay Agarwal said in the white paper the government should explain the entire sequence of events, details of negotiations and the so-called deal between the government and Ramdev.

The petition, moved before Additional Registrar Vinod Kumar who is the vacation officer, sought a direction to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Intelligence Bureau and Delhi Police to produce the entire records leading to the action.

The advocate has sought the production of these records with in 24 hours.

The additional registrar asked Agarwal to mention the petition tomorrow before a vacation bench comprising justices B S Chauhan and Swantanter Kumar at 10:30 am for hearing.

The petition has also sought direction to the government to restrain its ministers — Kapil Sibal , Subodh Kant Sahay and Pawan Kumar Bansal — from making any statement, justifying the midnight swoop which is leading to provocation among the public.

Did Scotty McCreery Deserve to Win American Idol?

122 million. That’s the number of people who crowned the newest American Idol this week.

Not exactly a small sample size. We could keep playing the numbers game – how many songs, how many aspirants he bested – but you get the idea.

Some will say Pia Toscano was ousted too soon, and she probably was. Ditto James Durbin. But can anyone really dispute Scotty McCreery’s worthiness?

Many of this year’s eliminations were controversial, but only relative to some of the contestants who outlasted them – not to Scotty specifically.

He’s got an outstanding voice perfectly suited for country, and he proved it time and again. What he lacks in flair, he makes up for with talent.

Slow, smooth and steady won this race, and deservedly so.
Scotty McCreery is a fantastic singer. If I were going purely by voice, he’d have earned my vote as American Idol champion after his first audition.

But forget what the judges say: This is not purely a singing competition.

There are, and there should be, other factors at work. The legitimacy of Idol itself is at stake, especially with new competition such as The Voice and The X-Factor.

It really needs to crank out a successful winner, and Lauren Alaina stands a better chance at sustained success than Scotty does.

For whatever reason, male victors simply don’t do well on the charts. Kris Allen? David Cook? Lee DeWyze? Can anyone name a top 10 single by any of them?

As evidenced by her duet with Carrie Underwood, Alaina has a long way to go. But she’s tough. She overcame a sprained throat to compete in the finals.

She clearly wants this and I have no doubt she has more potential to be the next Carrie than Scotty has to be more than a one-month wonder.

Real culprit wasn’t arrested, handcuffed: Krittika

New York:  Krittika Biswas, the daughter of an Indian diplomat hit out at the New York City administration for behaving in a highly prejudiced manner in arresting her in an alleged case of obscene emails sent to two teachers in her school.

Ms Biswas said the real culprit was not even arrested or handcuffed.

Krittika who was wrongly arrested and subsequently cleared of any wrongdoing is suing New York City for $1.5 million.

She said here is security camera footage proof that she was at a mall when the incident happened.
“I wasn’t even at the computer when the mail was sent,” said Ms Biswas.

She is the daughter of Debashish Biswas, vice consul (administration) at the Indian Consulate General in New York.

Krittika said her claims of diplomatic immunity were ignored when she was handcuffed and locked up for more than 24 hours on February 8.

The US government has, however, said that family members of the diplomat don’t enjoy diplomatic immunity.

“My understanding is that as a family member of consular officer, rather, she does not enjoy immunity from jurisdiction or inviolability,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters on Wednesday.

Toner acknowledged that diplomats’ family members carry a diplomatic passport, “but again, our understanding is that these provisions, however, don’t apply to their family members and that this is different for consular officers versus those in the embassy”.

The spokesman insisted that the incident would not affect US ties with New Delhi saying, “The US-Indian relationship, I would counter, has never been stronger.”

Emmy Rossum on ‘Shameless’ Sex Scenes: ‘Okay, Time to Take My Top Off’

Actress Emmy Rossum’s role in the new Showtime series Shameless is literally revealing. She’s frequently disrobing on the set because her character Fiona, the de facto mother of a dysfunctional Chicago family, is hot and heavy with new love interest Steve, played by Justin Chatwin.

But Rossum takes her many sex scenes with Chatwin — who told The Hollywood Reporter that their sex scenes are the closest he’s come to doing softcore pornography — in stride. She tells Vegas magazine “It’s like, okay, time to take my top off.”

Rossum and Chatwin’s previous work together on 2009’s Dragonball: Evolution makes filming intimate scenes less awkward, says Rossum, “The whole thing is so silly that if we weren’t so comfortable with each other, it would be really uncomfortable. It’s definitely an acquired experience.”

Rossum also says there’s realism in the way Fiona acts in bed, “It doesn’t make sense that the character would wear a bra and care at all about what she looks like when she’s having sex.” She continues, “Sex is meant to feel good, and she wants to feel good. Her life is so sh–y in so many ways. Some people use alcohol, some people use gambling — and some people use sex.”

Shameless airs Sundays on Showtime.

Lady Gaga, Oprah and Justin Bieber Top Celebrity 100 List

Lady Gaga is now Queen Gaga.

The “Monster” pop star dethroned talk show host Oprah Winfrey as the world’s most powerful celebrity on this year’s Forbes’ “Celebrity 100” list.

Although her $90 million in earnings in 2010 did not quite compare to Oprah’s $290 million, the 25-year-old poker-faced superstar soared to the top spot through her skilled use of social media – Gaga has 32 million Facebook fans and 10 million Twitter followers.

And all those loyal fans, also known as Little Monsters, are a huge customer base for many of the products Gaga designs or features in her elaborate music videos. They have flocked to the stores to buy MAC makeup and Virgin Mobile phones, and Gaga’s personally designed triangular “heartbeats” headphones quickly became so popular that they are currently out of stock on their webpage.

The title track from Gaga’s latest album “Born This Way” even made iTunes history, as it was downloaded one million times in just five days.

Even Oprah, whose 25-season-long talk show ends next Wednesday, isn’t that social media savvy. Although she certainly has influence over her many viewers and fans, the talk show queen has just under 6 million Facebook fans and the same number of Twitter followers. Combining the numbers from the two social media sites, that’s 30 million less than Lady Gaga.

But Oprah didn’t fall that far behind on the Forbes list.

She ranked second overall, thanks to her massive earnings from last year and her powerful television presence. Most of those earnings come from her show, and the many stars she has created, including Rachael Ray, Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil, who placed 18th on the list.

This was only the third time in seven years that Oprah has had to give up her throne. Although she has managed to work her way back up to the top each time, Oprah may have trouble winning back the crown next year.

The final season of her popular show is wrapping up, and Oprah will be concentrating all of her efforts on the struggling Oprah Winfrey Network, Forbes reported.

And she also has competition from young rising stars, one of who debuted on the top end of the list this year. Justin Bieber, who cut off his famous long locks in February and sold them for $40,668 in a charity auction on Ebay, earned $53 million last year, gaining him third place.

According to Forbes, his breakout song, “Baby” has been viewed on YouTube a record 500 million times, and the Biebs’ has 27 million Facebook fans and almost 9 million Twitter followers. Although he’s not quite at Gaga status yet, the 17-year-old singer has come a long way since he first hit the charts in 2010.

Bieber’s concerts bring in about $600,000 a night in ticket sales and his movie “Never Say Never” made more than $100 million at the global box office.

Bieber is followed closely by U2, a much more established band that has released hit songs since they first appeared on the music scene in 1983. Though their popularity has certainly weaned over the past few decades, their 360 Tour had already grossed more money than the Rolling Stones’ Bigger Bang Tour by this April.

And, by the time their tour ends this summer, it is expected to have brought in $700 million in ticket sales – that’s $146 million more than the Rolling Stones’, Forbes reported.

Chargesheet in CWG today; Kalmadi may figure

New Delhi: CBI might file the first chargesheet in the Commonwealth Games scam today, Friday, against Suresh Kalmadi and other former officials of the Organising Committee with the agency claiming to have enough evidence to nail them for alleged bunglings in a Rs 141 crore contract.

The agency may name sacked OC chairman Kalmadi along with the then officials; Secretary General Lalit Bhanot, Director General V K Verma, Deputy Director General (procurement) Surjeet Lal besides beneficiary company Swiss Timing for allegedly inflating the cost of contract causing Rs 95 crore loss to exchequer, top CBI sources said.

The CBI had claimed in its FIR that the contract for Timing Scoring and Results system was awarded by “wrongfully restricting and eliminating competition” from other suppliers in a pre-meditated and planned manner.

The CBI is also likely to send Letters Rogatory to Switzerland seeking details about beneficiary company Swiss Timing from local authorities after the first set of charges are levelled in the case, they said.

According to sources, the sleuths have found details of an alleged bribe of Rs 23 crore which exchanged hands for awarding the contract for framing the eligibility requirements in such a way that competing firms may be sidelined.

The agency has to file the chargesheet before May 23 as the 90-day mandatory period for levelling charges against Bhanot and Verma, arrested on February 23, will be getting over making the duo eligible for bail. Kalmadi was arrested on April 25.

Sources said Indian representatives of Swiss Timing were in constant touch with Kalmadi and other officials of the OC much before the tender was floated.

The contract worth Rs.141 crore was awarded for setting up Timing Scoring and Results system during the mega sporting event last year.

It is alleged that the Committee for shortlisting prospective bidders for TSR was constituted by selecting handpicked officials, CBI spokesperson Dharini Mishra had said after the arrest of Kalmadi.

Investigation has also revealed that members of the tenders evaluation committee were coerced and threatened to disqualify other bidders, she had said.

The agency has registered 11 FIRs in the cases related to Commonwealth Games scam.
